Running a Single-Man Inspection Business

Running a business is hard. Running a business by yourself is even harder. As a solo business owner, you’re probably thinking about 500 things at once while having your hands in dozens of projects. A single-man operation is stressful, but there are ways to lighten the burden!

Jeff Donaldson, owner of ACE Preferred Inspections, knows all about running a one-man operation. Jeff is an active business coach within the InspectionGo Community, and he has helped dozens of business owners during his twenty-two years in the inspection business.

Jeff recently spoke at 2020 3 Days of Secrets Revealed, InspectionGo’s annual inspection conference. He discussed ways to ease the stress that comes with running a one-man show and the importance of getting support when you need it.

Finding the Right Support

“If you don’t get support to back yourself up, you’ll drive yourself into the ground,” says Jeff.

What areas of your business could use an extra set of hands? Could you use extra support around the office? Do you wish you had someone to answer the phone?

Getting the right support will ultimately allow you to increase the number of inspections you’re scheduling. “As your company gets bigger it’s important to find the right support so you, as the inspector, can go out and get more revenue,” says Jeff.

While finding support is crucial, it’s equally important to find the right kind of support. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. For example, Jeff recommends call center outsourcing instead of hiring someone internally. “When you’re a one-man shop it’s easier to use a call center instead of hiring someone right off the bat to answer phones. You must be in a position that allows you to adapt to change,” says Jeff.

Hiring an outside call center allows your business to adapt to changing needs such as spikes in business, moving into a new market, or launching a new product. There’s a lower risk because you don’t have to worry about internal employees. Essentially, a call center does the adapting for you.

Finding the right support will simplify your workload and make things easier on yourself and on your business. You don’t have to do it all on your own!
